Subject: native ground covers

Message: I tired of mowing the lawn and am looking for a dense ground cover that will block out the grass yet sustain the high level winter rains. I would prefer something that is short and quick growing but can also be managed.

Message: Although the following selections are not necessarily native, they fit the criteria for what you are looking for. I do suggest spraying your grass with a product like Roundup prior to planting though. Applying a mulch such as a shredded bark will help keep weeds down until your groundcover fills in. Ajuga 'Chocolate Chip' or Lysimachia nummularia (Creeping Jenny) are 2 good choices for wet areas.
